Two off-duty Auckland officers were the subject of an police investigation after becoming involved in a fight during a Christmas celebration at a bar.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) said it oversaw the investigation into the incident, which involved two officers and members of the public.
According to the IPCA, the officers had been drinking with their colleagues when one became involved in a fight with two people at the same bar.
A second officer then jumped into the altercation to defend his colleague.
The fight was quickly broken up, but the first officer was knocked unconscious and required medical treatment.
Police said it carried out both criminal and employment investigations into the incident.
It was determined a criminal prosecution was not warranted, while the subsequent employment process resulted in a finding of misconduct against one of the officers.
The IPCA said it agreed with the decisions made by police and the outcome reached.
Police have been approached for comment.
