Sleet and snow hit Wellington, Dunedin police issue ice warning

Snow falling to low levels across parts of the eastern South Island has shut schools, closed several sections of state highway and caused multiple crashes in Dunedin.

Police urged residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

The icy conditions also have made their way to Wellington this afternoon, with multiple users on social media reporting snow had appeared to fall in parts of the capital, including the CBD and surrounding suburbs.

AA identifies the 'concerning knowledge gaps' in New Zealand drivers

Kiwi motorists have big "knowledge gaps" on navigating roundabouts, using bus lanes, and interacting with cyclists, a recent study has found.

The Automobile Association study asked 535 licensed drivers 24 questions about road rules and driving behaviour. The majority of participants answered less than 70% correctly.

Polkinghorne in tears as inquest views 2021 police interview

Philip Polkinghorne broke down in tears and an inquest into the death of his wife Pauline Hanna was briefly paused as the court viewed a police interview recorded on the day her body was discovered.

The inquest is examining the circumstances of Hanna's death and whether it was self-inflicted.
