A boy with autism was reported missing in Auckland's Glendene last week, sparking a time critical air and ground operation.
The search was launched when a mother called 111 just before 12.30pm on Friday, saying her son had gone missing from their property.
Acting Inspector Nick Salter said a neighbour saw the boy walking towards an area of bush which leads to an estuary. He said "time became critical" as the tide was due to rise in a few hours.
With the eagle helicopter searching overhead, the boy was spotted "within minutes". He was near the water's edge, playing near mangroves.

With direction from above, officers made their way towards the boy.
"He was wet and muddy but fortunately he was safe, and not in need of medical assistance,” Salter said.
The boy was safely returned to his family.
“Anyone who has kids will know how terrifying this would have been, and we are fortunate that this could be safely resolved so quickly,” Salter said.
“It’s a great result by all our staff that responded on Friday.”
