Two people are injured, one critically, after a crash closed State Highway 1 through the Dome Valley, north of Auckland this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash on SH1 near River Rd at around 2pm on Friday.

St John said it responded with seven units, including three ambulances, two rapid response units, and an operations manager.

"One patient is being airlifted to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition and one patient is being airlifted to Whangarei Hospital in a serious condition."

NZTA said State Highway 1 was closed in both directions between Warkworth and Wellsford.

"Delay your journey or allow extra time for a detour via SH16. Detour via SH16, using Woodcocks Rd and West Coast Rd, in both directions," a spokesperson said.

The serious crash unit has been advised.
