Appeal for witnesses after young man stabbed at Whangārei party

Officers were called to Forest View Rd in Te Kamo at around 11.50pm to reports of a fight between two people before one was stabbed.

Police are seeking assistance from the public after a young man was stabbed and critically injured at a party in Whangārei last Friday night.

Officers were called to Forest View Rd in Te Kamo at around 11.50pm to reports of a fight between two people.

Hato Hone St John said an ambulance, a rapid response unit, and a manager were sent to the scene.

"Our crews assessed and treated one patient who was transported to Northland Base Hospital in a critical condition," a St John spokesperson said.

The young man underwent surgery and remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Detective Sergeant Ryan Cooper said more than 200 people were present at the address but that most had left by the time officers arrived.

"We know there was a fight and a young man has been seriously injured as a result. We also know that there were people there who know those involved and we would like to speak to them," he said.

Cooper said the incident appeared to be isolated and that there was no risk to the wider public, adding the investigation team had set up a portal for receiving photos and videos of the altercation.

"An anonymous online portal has been set up for anyone with footage of the incident itself, or the general area at the time," he said.

"This incident could have had a tragic outcome and we need the community’s support to assist us in identifying those involved."
