A motorcyclist has been charged with riding at an "appalling" 170km/h on a state highway in Porirua.
Road Policing Acting Sergeant Mike Biggans said the 46-year-old rider was clocked on State Highway 59 at around 8pm on Wednesday in a "stunningly stupid" display of speed.
"At that speed, he was covering near 50 metres a second and didn’t have a snowball’s chance of reacting if something happened. The disappointing thing is, he’s old enough to know the risk he was putting himself in, and other motorists," Biggans said.
"He said he was 'blowing out the cobwebs'.
"It doesn’t bear thinking about what would have happened if he had come off, but he got to hear all the reasons why his riding behaviour was appalling."
He was summoned to appear in the Porirua District Court at a later date, charged with driving at a dangerous speed. His driver's license was also suspended for 28 days and the motorcycle was impounded.
Biggans said police would be highly visible on roads across the Wellington region throughout the long weekend.
“Humans are generally squishy objects, and we don’t fare well in collisions – that’s why police put such an emphasis on speed, restraints, impairment and distractions… if you’re in a crash, they’re the biggest factors in whether you walk away or not.”
