Truck carrying wood bursts into flames on key Coromandel highway

A truck and trailer fully loaded with wood caught fire on the Kopu-Hikuai Road this afternoon.

A truck carrying a full load of timber has burst into flames on a key Coromandel Peninsula route this afternoon, blocking State Highway 25A.

Fire and Emergency NZ received a 111 call at 3.29pm and arrived to find the cab of the truck well involved in flames, with the trailer fully loaded with wood.

"The driver is clear of the vehicle and there is no indication of harm to people," a FENZ spokesperson said.

Crews from Puriri and Thames were working to extinguish the blaze, with police requested to manage traffic.

In a statement, the New Zealand Transport Agency said a full closure was in place for SH25A Kopu to Hikuai Rd.

"Motorists are asked to follow the directions of emergency services."

Police were alerted to the incident and were en route to the scene, a police spokesperson said.
