A man has been charged over an alleged copper burglary at an Auckland substation, leaving a "significant amount of damage".
Police said a lone offender allegedly entered the facility on Madeira Ln in Grafton on the morning of Saturday, September 26.
The man allegedly targeted copper castings from the substation, which was supplying power to separate buildings at an apartment complex.
“While committing his offending, the man allegedly created tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of damage," Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend said.
Police raided a property in Manurewa last night and found a person of interest.
A 42-year-old man was charged with burglary and intentional damage. He was summonsed to appear in the Auckland District Court on October 12.
“Offenders that think a hi-vis vest is a good disguise should think again, we’re well aware of the tactic and this doesn’t work,” Friend said.
He urged people to call 111 if they see suspicious activity around commercial properties or other areas.
