A person has died following a crash on State Highway 1 north of Wellington that left drivers stuck on the road for hours.

Emergency services were called to the crash between the Tawa-Grenada North on-ramp and the Churton Park-Glenside off-ramp at around 4.40pm.

This morning, police confirmed a person was killed in the crash, while another was critically injured.

The southbound lane was closed between the two off-ramps for hours while the serious crash unit investigated.

Traffic ground to a standstill, and according to RNZ, some drivers sat waiting for more than four hours.

It was reported that some people had abandoned their cars while waiting for the road to reopen.

The section of motorway was opened shortly before 11pm.
