'Rapidly rising': Monster swells of up to 10m to batter New Zealand's east coasts
Waves off New Zealand's East Coast could reach up to 10m in the coming days as a "rapidly rising" swell approaches from the south of the country, leading several Cook Strait ferry services to be cancelled.
Heavy swell warnings have been issued for the Wellington and Wairarapa coasts, with dangerous conditions expected to peak on Tuesday.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake centred at sea shook part of the southern Philippines early Monday, causing damage in a key coastal city, knocking down power and setting off 1m tsunami waves along nearby coasts, officials said.
There was no tsunami threat to New Zealand.
Halloween train assault: Police receive new leads after public appeal
Police say they have received new information after a public appeal to identify several young women in relation to a serious assault at an Auckland train station on Halloween last year.
Four victims were attacked at Morningside Station on the platform and on a train carriage on the evening of October 31, 2025.
