New numbers reveal surging price of petrol, diesel

New numbers from Stats NZ have revealed the scale of fuel price increases in the months after the Middle East conflict started.

In the two months after February, the price of petrol increased 33.6%, while the price of diesel shot up 94.9%. The US and Israel launched their attack on Iran on February 28.

In the 12 months to April, petrol prices rose 30.1%, and diesel increased 91.3%.

According to Stats NZ, domestic airfares increased 4.2% from March to April, while International airfares jumped 6.2% over the same period.

“Easter, school holidays, and Anzac Day fell in April this year,” prices and deflators spokesperson Nicola Growden said. “Airfares reflect pricing set up to 12 months in advance, so movements can be influenced by a range of factors.”

Annually, both domestic and international airfares fell. In the 12 months to April, domestic fares dropped 9.9%, while international airfares fell 6.5%.

Energy prices incereased 2.4% in April, while gas prices increeased 0.3%.

“Electricity prices have been increasing every month since December 2024,” Growden said.

In the 12 months to April, energy prices increased 13.1%. while gas prices were up 10.8%.

Food prices recorded "flat movement' between March and April. Groceries increased 0.7%, while fruit and vegetables fell 2.3%.

Increases were recorded for avocados, meat pies, and chocolate blocks, while decreases were recorded for kiwifruit, apples, and legs of lamb.

Annually, food prices rose 2.6% in the 12 months to April, following another 3.4% rise in the 12 months to March.

Prices for meat, poultry, and fish rose 7.8%, and were the largest contributor to higher food prices, followed by restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food, up 2.7% annually

The main contributors to the increase were porterhouse/sirloin steak, beef mince, takeaway coffee, and white bread. Decreases were recorded for olive oil and potato crisps.
