A driver was taken to hospital in a critical condition after crashing into several parked cars in Auckland overnight.

Emergency services were called to Ridge Road in Howick just after 1am.

A police spokesperson said a vehicle had collided with several cars parked on the side of the road.

Fire crews said one person needed to be rescued after getting trapped.

Footage from the scene showed mangled cars and debris strewn across the road.

Fire and Emergency NZ said one person was trapped under a vehicle and equipment was required to rescue them.

Hato Hone St John took one person to Auckland Hospital.

The serious crash unit was investigating.
