A man in Italy has been accused of dressing up as his dead mother in a bid to claim her pension while keeping her mummified body in a closet.
According to CNN, the man, whose name was not shared by authorities, is the son of Graziella Dall’Oglio, who died in 2022 aged 82 in Borgo Virgilio, south of Verona.
Authorities said the man, a former nurse now unemployed, did not report his mother's death.
When her ID card expired, the man donned makeup, a wig, and her clothes to attempt the in-person process of renewing her card.
The agent who processed the application was suspicious and notified authorities. Security footage showed the man dressed as his mother driving into the car park, even though she did not have a driver's licence, and he was met by police.
When officers went to the woman's home, they found her mummified body in a laundry room closet, wrapped in sleeping bags.
The man was accused of concealing a corpse, fraud against the state, impersonation, and forgery of a public document. He was also accused of removing fluids from his mother's body to prevent decomposition.
An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause of her death. A police spokesperson told CNN the man remained in a local jail while prosecutors await the results of an autopsy.
