One dead, one injured, in 'serious incident' in Bay of Plenty

One person has died after they were allegedly injured by a person inside a car that later crashed in the Bay of Plenty this afternoon.

A second person was taken to hospital in a moderate condition, with a third person taken into police custody.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Flax and Matatā Rds at around 3.50pm on Saturday to reports of two people having been injured by a third person while in a vehicle.

Police said the vehicle had then left the road and crashed.

"Emergency services have carried out CPR on one of the victims, however sadly they have died at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

The alleged offender was arrested at the scene.

St John said its crews had assessed and treated one patient, who was transported to Whakatāne Hospital in moderate condition.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said it responded with three trucks and that there was a car "in a ditch".

Police said a scene examination was now underway, and the road was expected to remain closed for some time.

Diversions are in place, and motorists are asked to avoid the area.
