Police are looking for information after a man was spotted "dangerously" hitching a ride on the back of a Wellington-bound train yesterday.

Police were alerted around 8pm to a person hanging off the back of the train travelling from Hutt Valley.

Police said he got off at Ngauranga Station but had left by the time they could locate him.

"He is lucky not to have been injured or electrocuted by the overhead wires, and put his life at risk for no benefit," police said.

Metlink said they were "horrified by the incident".

"To protect all users of the rail corridor, we are helping the police with their enquiries."

One witness told Stuff they saw a man walking along the motorway towards Wellington shortly after the incident with a skateboard in hand.

He then ran across the motorway and jumped the concrete medium barrier.

Police are seeking for anyone with information about the incident to call 105.
