1 First NZTA-operated safety camera about to go live
The first NZTA Waka Kotahi-operated safety camera will go live on State Highway 1 in Northland shortly.
It will be located between Kawakawa and Moerewa, on a stretch of highway where five people have died between 2018 and 2023.
Temporary message signs will go up soon, alerting drivers that the camera will soon be operational. More permanent signs will be unveiled soon.
The camera will only detect speeding — it won't have the capacity to recognise or record number plates.

3 New names proposed for Auckland suburbs, other parts of the country
Consultations are open today on proposals to correct and restore two Māori place names in Auckland City.
The proposal from Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board would restore the original Māori name to an area on the waterfront of Auckland's CBD and correct the spelling of Takanini.
There are also changes afoot in the Rangitikei District.

The Government has announced a near $4 billion boost to combat potholes on state highways and local roads over the next three years.
Over the next three years, NZTA Waka Kotahi agency will deliver $2.07 billion in state highway pothole prevention, with $1.9 billion going towards prevention on local roads.

5 Police use of pepper spray 'justified' at huge Kaitaia brawl
Police were justified in their use of force at a huge brawl in the Far North nearly two years ago, the Independent Police Conduct Authority found after reviewing the incident.
The fight on October 8 in 2022 outside Kaitaia's Awanui Hotel involved a crowd of "about 80 people", police said.

Boeing launched astronauts for the first time overnight, belatedly joining SpaceX as a second taxi service for NASA.
A pair of NASA test pilots blasted off aboard Boeing's Starliner capsule for the International Space Station, the first to fly the new spacecraft.
The trip by Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams was expected to take 25 hours, bound for just over a week at the orbiting lab before climbing back into Starliner for a remote desert touchdown in the western US on June 14.

New Zealander man Jon Beardmore is on a mission: He wants to reconnect the world, one hand-delivered letter at a time.
Beardmore set out this year to complete what he calls "the Galapagos Postman Challenge". It's since made international headlines.
He took 50 letters from an ancient post box on Isla Floreana in Ecuador's Galapagos Islands in March and is now personally delivering them across the globe to raise awareness — and money — for people fighting Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
