It's the end of an era for many Kiwis, as Flybuys announced last week that it will be shutting shop at the end of the year.

The customer loyalty scheme gives members points for spending at selected retailers and has been operating in New Zealand since 1996.

Lizzy Ryley, chief executive of Loyalty NZ, which runs Flybuys, spoke to Seven Sharp about the imminent end of the loyalty scheme, which has about 1.8 million active members.

"It's been a tough week. The outpouring of support from our members has been wonderful — Kiwis do love Flybuys," she said while sharing some Flybuys memories from members.

"So many households have had the benefit of Flybuys for nearly three decades."

Ryley explained why the Flybuys model no longer works.

"We've withstood a lot of the changes in the environment, and it's happened globally. Technology has become available for businesses to run their own loyalty programmes," she said.

"In essence, what's happened is that businesses want to be able to talk directly to their customers. Coalition loyalty programmes worldwide have started to change or have moved towards propriety programmes.

"All good things come to an end."

Kiwis have until December 31 to spend their remaining points.
