Bunnings has launched its first loyalty programme for retail customers in New Zealand, offering shoppers rewards based on how much they spend.

Bunnings Rewards, which launched on September 1, was free to join and would allow members to earn one point for every $1 spent on eligible purchases in-store or online.

Once a customer reached 500 points — equivalent to $500 in eligible spending — they would receive $5 in rewards dollars to spend at Bunnings.

Members would be able to track their points and rewards through the Bunnings app and website.

Bunnings New Zealand general manager Melissa Haines said the programme was developed following feedback from customers.

“We know Kiwi households are keeping a close eye on their budgets right now, and customers have told us they want that reflected in how they shop with us," Haines said.

"Bunnings Rewards is our answer to that. A simple way to be recognised for the shopping people are already doing, whether that's tackling a DIY project, improving their garden or planning a renovation.

The programme also included a community initiative called Show Your Maanaki, which allowed members shopping in-store to help direct Bunnings funding towards selected non-for-profit groups.

Customers could collect a token from staff and place it in a collection box for the community group they wished to support.

Bunnings said it would contribute more than $100,000 to 18 community groups across New Zealand over a 12-month period.

The first three organisations taking part were Te Kōhanga Reo, Garden to Table and the Graeme Dingle Foundation.

"What makes this different is that it's not just about individual value," Haines said.

"We're proud to launch a programme that rewards our customers while giving back to the communities we're proud to serve."
