Police say they are not currently searching in the water for a man believed to have gone overboard from a Wellington Harbour ferry yesterday.

Wellington police said there is "no active water search underway," instead efforts were focused on shore-based inquiries.

A water search would recommence if further information came to light, a spokesperson said in a statement.

The ferry was travelling towards Days Bay, Eastbourne from Queens Wharf and left just after 6am on Friday morning.

The man was the sole passenger on the service and was no longer on board upon arrival in Days Bay.

The search involved up to 14 vessels and a rescue helicopter on Friday, but was suspended in the evening pending a review.

Police have still not identified the man and are calling the public for information.

He was described as being in his 40's, fair skinned, around 180cm tall with darker hair. He wore a dark jacket with a zip and dark pants.

"If you have a family member or friend who matches this description who has not returned home as expected, please contact police," a spokesperson said.
