Kiwibank finally launches mobile payments through Apple Pay

Apple Pay is now available to bank customers with an eligible Visa debit or credit card.

Kiwibank has finally introduced mobile payments for its customers through Apple Pay, seven years after a competitor first brought it to New Zealand.

ANZ first introduced mobile payments through Apple Pay in October 2016.

Other banks like Westpac, ASB and BNZ jumped on board soon after.

Apple Pay is now available to bank customers with an eligible Visa debit or credit card.

Kiwibank chief executive Steve Jurkovich said "many customers" had been waiting a "long time" for the feature.

"It's a huge achievement to un-wrap Apple Pay with Kiwibank today and I was stoked to make my first purchase in Wellington to buy a beverage," he said in a LinkedIn post.

"Many of our customers have been wanting to add their Kiwibank card to Apple Pay for a long time, and delivering this ahead of the holidays will help our customers leading into the busy Christmas retail period and beyond.

"Our Kiwibank teams have been putting in a huge amount of work to drive forward our technology transformation over the past few years which ensures we can offer innovative, safe and secure banking options."

However, for Android users, Kiwibank still doesn't support Google Pay — the most commonly used platform for mobile payments on the operating system.

Kiwibank's general manager of retail products Fiona Ehn said "significant" tech work was required before the bank could implement digital wallets.

"Once that was done we got straight onto delivering Apple Pay," she said in a statement.

"We are continuing to work hard behind the scenes to expand our overall digital wallets capability for Android users."
