Crowds of Wellingtonians queued today for the grand opening of the capital city's first LEGO store, with hundreds of eager people wanting to enter the iconic yellow storefront.
The store includes brick built tributes to the city with Clayton Windy Wellington – which was made with 62,939 bricks and took 456 hours to build – and a Wellington mosaic, which took nearly 90 hours to build and used 15,387 bricks.
The store also showcases builds that have already been completed, so patrons can see how big sets are before purchase.

Matthew Robertson, managing director of luxury brands at Alquemie Group, which works alongside the LEGO Group, said: "Our New Zealand fans are some of our most loyal and we look forward to inspiring all ages in our experiential store environment, where digital and physical store features fuel creativity and imagination."
The store features some of the most well-known LEGO sets in the market, with one customer today buying the LEGO Starwars Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser set, one of the most expensive sets sold.

Wellington City councillor Ben McNulty said on social media platform X in August that the store opening is "awesome news".
The store on Willis Street will be the third in New Zealand, meaning builders won't need to frequent Auckland or Christchurch for their LEGO fix. It's the 22nd store to open with the Alquemie Group.
The LEGO Group was founded in Billund, Denmark in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen.
The company's name is derived from the two Danish words Leg Godt, which mean "Play Well".
