A report has come out of Australia suggesting NRL star Shaun Johnson is set to sign with the Cronulla Sharks this afternoon.

This morning the New Zealand Warriors announced that Johnson had been released from the final year of his contract.

Johnson sat down with Warriors CEO Cameron George, coach Stephen Kearney, Warriors recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan and his own manager Peter Brown in a meeting yesterday.

This morning, George said Johnson had been released "effective immediately".

"I saw evidence yesterday in our meeting of an individual who didn't want to represent this club in 2019 and asked accordingly," said George.

Australian rugby league reporter Brent Read, who writes for The Australian, tweeted today that Johnson is set to sign a one-year deal with the Sharks.

If Johnson links up with the Sharks he will partner up with former Warriors half Chad Townsend, which means Matt Moylan will be the likely option to play at fullback, with Valentine Holmes being released to chase his NFL dreams.

The St George Illawarra Dragons could be another landing spot for Johnson, after news surfaced overnight that star halfback Gareth Widdop is seeking for a release.

Cameron George said the club comes first, no matter the player. (Source: Other)

Widdop is on around NZ$1 million a season which ends in 2021, with multiple reports suggesting he wants to return home to England.
