Duck hunting season officially gets underway this weekend, with keen hunters up and down the country getting ready for action.
In Riversdale near Gore in Southland, an Australian hunter has a cheeky plan to stitch up locals who will be joining them on the hunt.
"Think I might sandpaper up a few of their shells so they don't shoot straight while we're out there Saturday to stir them up," David Smith told 1 NEWS.
More than 40,000 hunters are expected to be out around the country this weekend.
There is a daily limit of 20 ducks per licensed hunter this weekend and once the prize is caught it's all about finding the right recipe.
"Duck a l'Orange? That's always a hot one if you're cooking for a girl on a date," Mr Smith said.
Only a few more anxious hours of waiting for the hopes of a successful season ahead.
