Watch: Heroic off-duty cop rushes in to save choking man's life in US restaurant

October 27, 2017

A quick thinking off-duty police officer has come to the aid of a man choking to death in a US restaurant.

Dennis Palaia, a New Jersey State Police Trooper, was tucking into a meal with his son at Buffalo Wild Wings in Rockaway on Monday, when he saw a man at a nearby table begin coughing and grabbing at his throat.

The off-duty officer then sprang into action, rushing behind the stricken man to perform the Heimlich manoeuvre on him.

"Trooper Palaia quickly wrapped his arms around the man's waist and provided four abdominal thrusts, which cleared his airway," New Jersey State Police said in a statement.

They went on to say the choking man made a full recovery and was grateful to the officer for saving his life.
