Auckland motorists fuming about the fuel tax they're about to be hit with by the new Government would have quite a drive to get the cheapest petrol in the country.
Aucklanders will be paying 10 cents a litre more for their petrol to fund transport infrastructure.
Seven Sharp reported the average petrol fill is around 26 litres a week, and 10 cents a litre on that means an extra $2.60.
For diesel, the average fill is 40 litres, meaning a $4 a week premium, or $200 a year.
But Auckland still has a cheaper average gas price, at $1.95 per litre, than Wellington where it's $2.00 per litre or the West Coast, $2.12 per litre.
So what's the cheapest place for petrol in the country? It's Taranaki, where the average price is $1.79 per litre.
Meanwhile, Gull Petroleum general manager Dave Bodger predicts motorists will try to dodge the Auckland petrol tax.
"You've got tens of thousands of cars flooding into Auckland every day. They'll fill up before they turn up," he said.
The tax may also create a petrol black market and Mr Bodger says that means the tax will need to be policed.
"Yes, petrol police. I don't see how we're going to do this without some form of policing because it's just inherent for people to look to dodge it when the incentive is that great," he said.
