Teen learner driver clocked at over 150km/h on Christchurch motorway

The Christchurch Northern Corridor.

A teenage learner driver's been referred to Youth Aid after they were clocked speeding at more than 150km/h on a Christchurch motorway.

Christchurch road policing team leader Senior Sergeant Richard Carolan said officers were carrying out routine speed checks on the Northern Corridor in mid-October, when a vehicle was pinged going more than 1.5 times over the speed limit.

"The posted speed limit on this part of the highway is 100km/h – to be over this by more than half is shocking," Carolan said.

"This type of dangerous driving is extremely thoughtless. You are not just putting your own life at risk, but everyone else on the road who are doing the right thing and following the road rules."

Carolan added that the 17-year-old had been on their learner's licence and was driving unaccompanied.

The teenager was referred to Youth Aid and their licence was suspended.

"Police are all too familiar with some of the devastating outcomes of dangerous driving, and I am relieved that we were able to stop this vehicle before a tragedy stopped it for us," he said.

"Everyone deserves to get home safely, and we are urging motorists to take a moment and think about everyone else on the road before participating in unsafe driving."

Anyone who witnesses dangerous driving that is happening now has been urged to call 111. Non-urgent information can be provided through 105.
