A man has been charged after police observed vehicle travelling at nearly twice Kāpiti Expressway's 110km/h speed limit last night – eventually crashing into a wire barrier.
Just before 8.25pm, police spotted a motorist speeding south on State Highway 1 Waikanae on the Kāpiti Coast.
The driver failed to stop for police but was not pursued due to the manner of driving.
Within several minutes, the vehicle was seen by traffic cameras leaving the Expressway at Waikanae and getting back on heading northbound – before crashing into a wire barrier near the Ngarara Bridge.
The driver was found by police shortly afterwards and was assessed by ambulance staff.
Incredibly, police noted he was uninjured.
"The road was closed for some time while the scene was assessed and cleared, as debris from the crashed vehicle was spread across all lanes."
A 35-year-old man is due to appear in the Porirua District Court on October 20 charged with failing to stop for police, reckless driving, and driving while disqualified.
Inspector Renée Perkins said the reported manner of driving was very concerning, and thankfully not too common.
"It’s a wonder the driver or any other road users were not injured or worse given the manner of driving," Perkins said.
"Our road policing team are highly visible, doing a great job cracking down on speed and this type of reckless driving behaviour."
