A man was left with life-altering injuries following a "senseless and cowardly attack" in Mount Maunganui over the weekend.

Police were called to reports of an assault at a property on Oceanbeach Road shortly after midnight on Sunday, November 1.

The victim was taken to hospital, where he remained in a stable condition, but suffered injuries believed to be "life-altering", Detective Sergeant Aaron Williams said.

“This was a senseless and cowardly attack which has left a person with significant injuries and has had a considerable impact on those close to him," Williams said.

Investigators believed those responsible were part of a group that showed up uninvited to a private gathering.

“The investigation team are making good progress and are continuing work to identify those involved, to ensure people can be held accountable for their actions," Williams said.

Police wanted to speak with anyone in the Oceanbeach Road area in the late hours of Saturday 31 October, into the early hours of the next day.

Investigators were looking for information about the incident or any relevant CCTV or dashcam footage.

“We believe there are people within our community who know exactly what occurred, and it is imperative that we speak to them as part of our investigation.”

Those with information were asked to call 105.
