An Australian woman has been arrested for allegedly using poisonous snail pellets to contaminate her colleague's curry lunch.

Western Australia police said the victim had brought the container of curry to her Perth workplace on February 12, intending to share it with colleagues.

"The curry had been shared among employees and consumed without issue during a morning tea break," a spokesperson said.

After the meal, a staff member went into a chemical storage shed. She then headed to the lunchroom, where the food was kept.

When the victim took her lunch break, she noticed "bright green granules in the food" and, after tasting a small amount, "experienced numbness to her tongue".

The substance found in the curry was later identified as snail pellets containing the poisonous metaldehyde.

A 43-year-old Perth woman, who police said had a "personal relationship" with the victim, was arrested on October 8.

She was charged with one count of ‘Unlawful Act or Omission with Intent to Harm' and will appear in the Armadale Magistrates Court on November 5.
