Former Blues star Kurt Eklund announced his retirement from professional rugby after concerns were raised about ongoing neck issues.
The hooker took to social media and released a statement revealing he had been advised to hang up the boots.
"That’s all she wrote. I've been battling neck injuries for the past few years and I've been told it's in my best interest to step away from the game, so that's what I am going to do," he said.
Eklund was due to move to Japan after signing a contract with the Yokohama Canon Eagles alongside fellow Blues player Stephen Perofeta, but never left New Zealand.
Despite the 34-year-old's career being cut short, Eklund said he was proud of all he accomplished in the sport.
"I’m truly grateful for all the opportunities the people I have met and the memories I’ve made along the way," he said.
"If you'd told 10-year-old me that I'd be able to achieve all the things I've been able to, I would have thought you'd be joking."
Former All Blacks captain Sam Cane and All Blacks and Hurricanes fly half Ruben Love were among those leaving comments showing their support for their teammate.
"Top man. Sorry to hear it finish this way bro. All the best for the next venture," Cane wrote.
"All the best brother made me feel welcomed first day Māori ABs 2022 will never forget. Respect bro!" Love said.
Eklund played 75 matches for the Blues, debuting in 2020 against the Chiefs and scoring 115 points across his tenure.
He also captained the Māori All Blacks in 2025, playing nine games since June 2021.
