One person has died after an incident involving a train at Te Awamutu railway station yesterday.

Senior Sergeant John McCarthy said emergency services were notified about 6.20pm on Sunday.

"Sadly, one person died at the scene," he said.

"This is a tragic incident, and we are providing support to whānau and those who acted immediately to try to help."

McCarthy urged anyone who witnessed what happened to contact police online, or by calling 105.

The Serious Crash Unit has carried out a scene examination and inquiries were ongoing.
