MPs from all parties have been confronted with some of the most devastating realities of the health system during a debate in Auckland last night

Alongside frontline medical staff, they heard directly from a man whose cancer diagnosis was made through sheer luck and also can’t access treatment here, and from daughter of Brent Horsburgh, who recently died in Waikato Hospital's emergency department following a nine hour wait.

Also speaking was Gareth Hall, whose daughter Maddie committed suicide three-and-a-half years ago despite years of interactions with the health system

Hall and patient advocate Malcolm Mulholland spoke to Breakfast about the debate and their experiences in the health system.
