A person remains unaccounted for as crews battle a house fire on Matakana Island in Bay of Plenty.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson told 1News that crews were called to the island north of Tauranga and Mt Maunganui at around 4.09am.

Crews from Matakana Island, Greerton, and Ōmokoroa responded to the blaze.

FENZ said one person remains unaccounted for.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said it responded with a helicopter, and a person was taken to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition.
