The driver of a stolen vehicle has died after colliding head-on with an oncoming driver in Auckland's Manurewa last night.
The occupant of the second vehicle suffered moderate injuries and has been hospitalised.
The incident started following reports of an aggravated robbery on Greenmeadows Ave, Superintendent Shanan Gray said.
The offender was accused of taking a vehicle after threatening someone at the property with a crowbar.
"As police units approached the area they observed a vehicle being driven in the middle of the road, without headlights," said Gray, the Counties Manukau District Commander.
"Inquiries later confirmed the vehicle was the one stolen from Greenmeadows Ave.
"Police signalled for the vehicle to stop. However, it failed to do so and took off at speed.
"Around 9.42pm the vehicle has travelled onto Alfriston Road, where it has collided head on with a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.
"Officers immediately rendered first aid. However, the driver and sole occupant of the stolen vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene.
"The occupant of the second vehicle was taken to hospital with moderate injuries."
The serious crash unit have finished their investigation and Independent Police Conduct Authority will look at the incident.
"We are also working to support those affected and their families, as well as our staff who were involved," Gray said.
"All those involved in the initial report of aggravated robbery are believed to be known to each other, and there is no ongoing risk to the public."
