Swimmer Lewis Clareburt has won the country's first gold medal at this year's Commonwealth Games with his effort in the 200m butterfly.
The win has seen Clareburt defend his title won at Birmingham four years ago.
The 27-year-old, who had qualified second for the final, looked well out of the running at the halfway mark, turning seventh, and then sitting fourth going into the final 50 metres.
Commentators were in bisbelief as the reigning champ produced an epic late burst to storm home past Australian Harrison Turner, who had led the entire race.
His finishing time was 1:55.05, the only swimmer to go below 30 seconds over the final 50 metres.
Turner settled for silver in 1:55.38, with fellow Australian Matthew Temple third in 1:55.45.
New Zealand has also just won bronze in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay, which saw Erika Fairweather earn a fourth medal in Glasgow.
Earlier today, Kiwi para swimmer Joshua Willmer nabbed a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke SB9, after originally finishing the race in third.
But due to a disqualification for Canadian Fernando Lu, the fastest qualifier who was second in the final, Willmer was upgraded to second.
The 21-year-old said he was "stoked" to finish in the top three, but felt for Lu.
