Extra security measures are being considered by Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown after a man "took a swing at him" at an event last month.
The incident took place at a fundraiser Brown attended with his wife for National's Auckland Central candidate Candace Kinser.
The mayor rejected any suggestion he initiated a physical altercation, with a spokesperson saying "this was someone being physically threatening and aggressive, who took a swing at him".
"Occasionally and increasingly, some members of the public are behaving aggressively and in a threatening way towards him.
"The Mayor would like to make it clear that while this is incredibly disappointing, it will not stop him attending public events."
As a result of the incident, the mayor and his family were exploring additional security measures, both at work and at home.
The spokesperson added that "threatening sentiment" from lobbying groups such as the Auckland Ratepayers Alliance was "problematic and needs to stop".
Auckland Ratepayers Alliance spokesperson Josh van Veen said the idea of the group calling out the mayor politically provoking violence was "bizarre" and urged police to investigate the incident.
"Violence has no place in our democracy. Whether the target is the Mayor or any other member of the public, allegations of violence should be treated seriously and those responsible held to account."
