- A state of emergency was declared yesterday in the Kaikōura district after the Kōwhai River burst its banks, causing significant flooding.
- Residents across Kaikōura were urged to evacuate yesterday, and more than 150 people sheltered overnight at two evacuation centres.
- The Kaikōura mayor said some bridges have been washed out, and several sections of state highway were affected by weather across the South Island.
- A red heavy rain warning remains in effect for parts of Marlborough and Canterbury, including the Kaikōura Ranges today.
- Some yellow heavy rain watches are also in place, including in the North Island.
- The same weather system battered Otago on Monday, where a state of emergency remains in effect for the Waitaki District.
