An Auckland builder who repeatedly refused to pay tax has been sentenced to six months' community detention after evading more than $40,000 in income tax and GST.
Christopher Allan Mankin appeared in court on July 3, where he was ordered to pay $22,549.50 in reparation, according to a statement from Inland Revenue (IRD).
Mankin faced two representative charges of failing to provide information to IRD with the intention of evading the assessment or payment of income tax and GST.
The court noted Mankin was no stranger to this type of offending, IRD stated.
He had been convicted in 2019 over 34 charges of failing to provide information relating to income tax and GST across five years but continued to flout his obligations.
Mankin registered for income tax in May 2011 and for GST in February 2013.
His bank accounts showed regular income from building work, yet no returns were filed between 2018 and 2020.
Judge Paul remitted $3000 in fines owed by Mankin, in exchange for 150 hours of community work, to allow him to make reparations at $70 per week.
The total tax evaded came to $40,618.60 — made up of $26,027.10 in income tax and $14,591.50 in GST, according to Inland Revenue.
