A person has died following a single-vehicle crash north of Auckland this evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Port Albert Rd in Port Albert, off the Kaipara Harbour, around 5.25pm.

Police said one person was found in a critical condition and died a short time later.

"The road is closed, with diversions in place, while the serious crash unit works at the scene," police said.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
