Fire crews are currently battling several vegetation fires in Canterbury caused by strong winds this afternoon, after Christchurch recorded its hottest June temperature on record earlier today.

Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) said the fires included a blaze at a forestry block in Hurinui and a "substantial" fire near Rolleston, which had impacted at least one structure.

Up to 16 crews and a helicopter were working to contain a large forest fire near O’Carrolls Rd, Hawarden, which was reported at around 2.18pm Saturday.

"The fire is not contained or controlled at this stage," FENZ said.

"Please stay away from the area and allow our crews to work safely."

Eight appliances were also responding to a wildfire in Mt Culverden, which was reported about 2.30pm.

Earlier today, fire crews from seven brigades responded to a hedge fire at McQueens Valley Rd in Gebbies Valley at around 12.30pm.

Fire and Emergency assistant district commander Brian Keown urged people to check on any fires, including burn-offs lit in the past two weeks, to ensure that they were not reigniting.

He also said people should avoid lighting any fires in the current conditions.
