A person has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after a vehicle crashed into a ditch on State Highway 1 in Waimate this afternoon.

Police said they were called to SH1 at the intersection with O’Neills Rd in Makikihi around 2.20pm.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said it was alerted to the crash at 2.20pm and responded with two ambulances, one helicopter, one operations manager and one rapid response vehicle.

One person was airlifted to Timaru Hospital in a critical condition.

Fire and Emergency said it responded to a "single car crashed into a ditch" with two crews from Waimate.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and expect delays.
