A major response by St John is underway after a "traffic-related incident" in the Gisborne region.
St John said nine vehicles were sent to the scene on Wharekopae Rd, Pātūtahi at 5.15pm on Friday.
"Five ambulances, two rapid response units, two operations managers, and our major incident support team are on scene.
"Two helicopters are still responding."
St John said there was an "unknown" number of patients – but they were assessing "multiple" people in moderate to serious conditions.
Police said the road was closed.
"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays."
