Police are appealing to the public for information after an 11-year-old was assaulted in Whitby, Porirua on Wednesday morning.
Inspector Renée Perkins said the incident happened at around 5.45pm on Albatross Cl, where a man wearing a red shirt and dark coloured shorts allegedly ran up to two children and assaulted the 11-year-old.
"Another child intervened and the offender fled on foot," Perkins said.
"Thankfully, they were not injured and are being provided support."
Police were now seeking information from anyone who within the vicinity of Endeavour Park at the time of the incident.
"We are particularly interested to hear from anyone who has CCTV from the surrounding streets, including Albatross Cl, Observatory Cl, Tide Ln and Trade Winds Dr."
Anyone with dashcam footage recorded in the area between 5.30pm and 6pm was also encouraged to contact police.
Perkins said police were treating the matter with "urgency", and the Whitby community could expect an increased police presence in the area as the incident was investigated.
"Police know incidents such as this can cause concern in our community. We urge people to be alert, not alarmed, and be mindful of your surroundings if you are out alone," she said.
