Fresh appeal seven years after Rotorua mum's 'unexplained' death

Melissa Jones was 25 when she went missing in October 2019.

Police have made a fresh appeal for information about the "unexplained" death of a Rotorua mum, whose body was found on a lake shorefront nearly seven years ago.

Melissa Jones, who was 25 years old when she died, was last seen in Rotorua on the weekend of September 7–8, 2019.

She was found dead on the shorefront of Lake Rotorua on October 18, 2019.

She was the mother of two young children.

"She is remembered by those who knew her," Inspector Herby Ngawhika said.

As the seven-year anniversary of Jones' death approaches, Ngawhika said police "remain committed" to finding out what happened to her.

"Police believe there are people in the community who may hold information that could assist in establishing what happened to Melissa," Ngawhika said.

"Anyone who may have information is encouraged to come forward."

Police had previously shared an image of clothing believed to be worn by Jones before she died.

The image police shared of Jones, showing what she was believed to be wearing prior to her death.

They were black pants, a black mesh top, and a red garment worn around her waist.

"These items have not been located, and police would still like to hear from anyone who may be able to assist with their recovery."

Ngawhika said that following a recent coroner’s case management conference, police had told both the coroner and Jones' family that the investigation remained open.

"Any new information that comes to light will continue to be assessed and investigated."

Those with information about Jones' death were asked to call Rotorua police or Crimestoppers.
