One person has been critically injured following a serious two-vehicle crash involving a truck fire and a trapped person which left a section of State Highway 1 north of Spotswood in Canterbury closed this morning.
Emergency services were called to Parnassus Rd (SH1) near McPhersons Stream Bridge in the Hurunui District shortly after 8.30am.
St John said it responded with two helicopters, a PRIME unit, two operations managers, a first response unit and an ambulance.
"Our ambulance staff treated two patients and transported one of them to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter in a critical condition. The other patient, who was in a minor condition, did not require transport to hospital."
Fire and Emergency NZ sent three appliances from Spotswood, with three further crews responding from Culverden, Hurunui and Scargill.
