Police have arrested a 35-year-old man in the South Island after an assault on a child at Guthrie Park in Havelock North on Friday.

The man was located and taken into custody in Picton earlier today.

He is due to appear in the Blenheim District Court on Tuesday facing three serious charges relating to the incident. Police said they will be opposing his bail.

Detective Inspector James Keene said police were providing support to the victim and their family following what he called a "distressing" incident.

"We wish to thank the public for the information that was provided to police in relation to this incident, and for their ongoing support," he said.

Keene also acknowledged police officers across the Eastern, Wellington and Tasman districts for their collaborative work and swift arrest.

"If you are alone in a public place, take note of your surroundings and call 111 if you feel unsafe or notice anything suspicious," he said.

Police will continue to conduct reassurance patrols in the area surrounding Guthrie Park in Havelock North.
