Licence to cast: Search for new James Bond gets underway

Daniel Craig was the most recent actor to bring Hollywood's most famous spy to the big screen.

The world's most famous super-spy is preparing for his next mission, as the casting process for the new James Bond gets underway.

The successful actor would be the seventh official actor to play Ian Fleming's secret agent in the franchise's 64-year history, stepping into the tuxedo worn by the likes of Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and, most recently, Daniel Craig.

"The search for the next James Bond is underway," the studio said in a statement.

"While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right."

Last year, it was announced that Dune director Denis Villeneuve would direct the next Bond film, a follow-up to Craig's final outing in 2021's No Time to Die.

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight would pen the script for the film, tentatively titled Bond 26.

Speculation about who will next order their martini 'shaken, not stirred' has been swirling for years, with the likes of A-listers Idris Elba, Henry Cavill and Cillian Murphy floated as potential successors.

Others reportedly tipped to be in the running for the role were British actors Callum Turner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Harris Dickinson, and Australian star Jacob Elordi.

Last year it was announced that creative control of the series was being handed off from longtime producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to Amazon MGM Studios.
