A man accused of driving a stolen car while disqualified was found hiding on the roof of a church near Porirua early this morning after trying to evade police.
Around 12.30am, a 33-year-old Kapiti man was observed by police behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle with a licence plate that did not match the make and model.
The driver was identified as someone who had previously been disqualified from driving.
He allegedly ignored instructions to pull over, before stopping on Grays Rd in Plimmerton, running off and leaping over some fences.
The man was tracked by police dog units who, a short time later, indicated he had climbed onto the roof of a nearby church.
A police drone operator confirmed this, and he was taken into custody without further incident.
The man will appear in the Porirua District Court today facing a number of charges.
