Sir Peter Jackson’s returning to the director’s chair for his first feature film in more than a decade – the sequel to 2011's The Adventures of Tintin.

The 64-year-old, best known for directing the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, has not helmed a feature film since 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

The Wellingtonian has worked on numerous documentaries, however, including They Shall Not Grow Old (2018) and The Beatles: Get Back (2021).

He's also kept busy as a producer, working on Mortal Engines (2018) and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

Jackson told entertainment website Gold Derby he would be returning to direct a follow-up to the Tintin film, adding that he and his partner Fran Walsh were working on a script.

“Fran and I have been writing a script for the next Tintin film because 15 years ago, Steven Spielberg directed a Tintin film and I produced it,” he said.

The 2011 film, based on the Belgian comic series, follows the titular Tintin, his dog Snowy and Captain Haddock as they search for treasure on a ship, the Unicorn.

“The idea was that then I was supposed to go straight onto a second one, and we’d swap the roles, so I’d direct the second one and he’d produce it,” Jackson explained. “It’s just taken 15 years to get there, unfortunately, a bit late. But it’s a timeless story. So, we just wrapped up. So probably the next film that I’d actually direct is a Tintin movie.”
