Police at an accident scene.

A person has died after a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on the Waikato Expressway this morning.

Part of the busy highway remains closed to southbound traffic.

Emergency services were called to the incident, north of Huntly, at around 7am.

"Tragically, the pedestrian died at the scene," police said.

The expressway, a key part of State Highway 1, was closed to southbound traffic between the Te Kauwhata and the Rangiriri on-ramps.

"The Expressway remains closed southbound from Te Kauwhata while the serious crash unit conduct a scene examination," police said in an update just before midday.

"Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."

St John said it sent an ambulance and first response vehicle, but said any further information would come from police.
